Influential Articles

During my studies in Addictions, there was an article by Matthew R. Lee and Kenneth J. Sherr that I came across and I felt profoundly changed the way in which I view Alcohol Use Disorder. Prior to having read this article, I (wrongly) assumed that people who struggled with substance use (alcohol, in particular) were somehow genetically fated to struggle with substance use. It seems that isn’t at all the case. In fact, some people “mature out” of problem drinking behaviors, such as binge drinking. I know that in my own family, there have been people who just suddenly quit after decades of very heavy drinking. No 12 steps. No group. Nothing. They just quit. It’s rather fascinating.
